Sam and Dean was not supposed to become healthy and mature, they were supposed to become victims of their life, slowly falling apart under the pressure, becoming darker and darker and more and more codependent until they finally die in a blaze of redeeming glory.

Why I feel supernatural should have ended with season 5.

bangingpatchouli:

Why I feel that after season 5 Supernatural should have ended.

I love SPN. Like I love SPN. It’s because I love supernatural so much that I’m unsettled…

You see, to anyone who has been watching the show from the beginning with absolute devotion and unwavering love, you will understand what I mean when I say after season 5, this is now a completely different show.  I understand that with time things change and grow or simply fall apart, but this is too much. Watching supernatural now is the the equivalent of coming home one day to find that everything has been removed, all the sentimental objects once held close to my heart has disappeared. In the end, it doesn’t feel like home at all.The characters lost on SPN outweigh the extension of the series. They died the way they were supposed to and took pieces of my heart with them,  but it was okay because it made sense. The ending of their lives complimented the very lives they lived, their every actions coincided with the plot, other characters… everything. Their deaths represent what was supposed to be the end, so now the show simply drags on. Unfortunately It’s not hard to spot throughout the next three seasons.

Since the pilot aired, the ultimate 5 seasons of Supernatural were thought out meticulously. It was obvious by the consistencies in the plot, the way phrases and events fit together like forgotten puzzle pieces.                                                                                                              From the beginning supernatural was crafted  piece by intricate piece, each detail with a purpose. After season 5, and the true and heartbreakingly beautiful, ending befitting of such excellency, it is easy to understand how the production staff would become so lost.                          Today the plot is so deformed from the essential characters themselves, that it hurts. I remember when  Sam and Dean used to show up as SamandDean. Afterwards due to the Winchester brothers battling  brother, self and nature, it was suddenly Sam and Dean, with good reason. Come the ending scene of season 5 they becameSamandDean again, because at the core that is who they are, since Lucifer and Micheal, that is who heaven and hell conspired them to be.                                                                                                                                                                    Then one day… it was ” This is Sam. And This is Dean.

Oh, and this is Cas.”

Now, I love(d)  the character Castiel, more so, when he was relevant. In turn I do love Misha. His creativity, humor and quirk are delightful. He has made me cry from laughter on many occasions, but at this point in time, his presence on the show Makes. Me. Want. To. Scream.

I will not blame the dramatic deformation of Supernatural on his presence in the show solely, but the need to keep Castiel as more than a supporting character has disrupted the foundation of supernatural.  He has been wedged into everything. Holes are carved into plots to make room for Cas. He does not fit. Castiel no longer fits into the show. If Supernatural is to successfully progress, as much as we love him, they have got to let him go as a main character, for he was never intended to become a primary fixture in the dynamic of the Winchester brothers.

I hope you’ll forgive me for butting in here but the post is quite long and I wanted to address this point specifically (the full post can be read at subtextequalsbuttsex blog). So on the issue of Castiel:

I think that there’s an argument to made that if nothing else, keeping Castiel as a major recurring character has contributed greatly to Supernatural being locked into the Judeo-Christian myth arc that it’s been in for eight seasons now. Sure we get eps that include the old gods, but the are relegated to minor roles. Instead, we’ve continued with the angels and demons storyline, which is wearing thin.

There are so many places they could have taken the boys outside Judeo-Christian myth. Remember the suggestion from the Leprechaun that fairies were more powerful than angels? That parallel universe of the fae? The show has acknowledged that there many other ‘gods’ than the J-C one, so why not explore those mythologies instead of just using them as one-off MOTW fodder?

The show failed to explore so many fascinating possibilities after S5, and the desire to keep Castiel on the show contributed that failure. Instead of keeping him a secondary recurring character, they made him central to the plot in a way that they wouldn’t have if they’d moved away from the angels and demons storyline. It’s prevented them from doing something new with the show, and locked the characters into an unhealthy dynamic.

There was an opportunity after S5 to have Sam and Dean see each other in a new light. Dean would have, one would have thought, seen Sam as a capable adult and equal, and Sam would have seen Dean as a partner, not an extension of their controlling father. They would have worked as a team in a new way. Their relationship would have evolved instead of stagnating the way it did. Instead, TPTB have them stuck in a cycle of lies and secrets and power struggles that go back to S1 as though they’ve learned nothing.

(To be fair, I thought that Gamble had worked them out of a lot of that or was on the way to when Carver did a complete S1 reset this season. However this season turns out, I’ll probably never forgive him for that. He’s far worse than Gamble in that he’s tossed out both the mythology and characterizations that Kripke established.)

So, I don’t think that Supernatural should have ended with Swan Song, but I  do think that the demons and angels storyline should have. I think it was a failure of imagination to continue with it, and Castiel was probably a big part of why it did.

“Sam, Dean. I’ve been studying you for years…”

At last, I’m done! As you can see on the pictures, this art of Castiel sitting at a table and gathering everything he knows about the Winchester, is pretty big. It’s 29,7 x 84 cm. I drew it on two pages of my A3 sketchbook. I’m very happy because I managed to scan it (pic #2).

I’ve always liked the idea of Cas studying human and gathering information about them like the Men of Letters used to do for supernatural creatures.

#that one time wincest was so canon i couldn’t think straight #it’s like fanfiction but better

#the thing is #it’s not like Dean is sexually reserved or anything #I mean he obviously likes women and banging women and he finds women attractive #he’s kind of a slut #BUT THE SIREN DIDN’T TURN INTO A WOMAN #HE DIDN’T TURN INTO ONE OF THOSE HOT CHICKS DEAN LIKES TO PICK UP AT BARS #no he fucking turned into SAM instead #like holy shit someone please tell me what is not incestuous about that

this is not fanon, not subtext, not evidence of Dean’s general bisexuality, it’s Sam that he wants/loves most — btw this is the only ep in which Sam ever has casual sex that we know of, Dean knows about it, and I think it is jealousy that fuels this scene just as it is Dean’s repressed anger at Sam that fuels the specter’s revenge-rage in Southern Comfort when Dean nearly kills Sam — Dean has some deeply repressed issues with his brother

Bolded for truth.
